Challenging Overnight Hike to Maitland Hut

Nestled in the breathtaking Southern Alps in Ruataniwha Conservation Park, Maitland Hut stands as a charming retreat for adventurers seeking a challenging hiking solace in nature. This modest hut, accommodating up to four people, is perched at an elevation of 970 meters, offering the comforts of an open fire for warmth, a long drop, and water from a nearby stream.

Before embarking on your hike, it is essential to obtain permission from Lake Ohau Station, ensuring both respect for the land and the safety of your adventure. The contact details for acquiring this permission can be found on the Department of Conservation (DOC) website.

The hike begins on a well formed 4WD track that crosses the expansive farmland of Lake Ohau Station. This initial 5 kilometer stretch is an enjoyable introduction to the area’s stunning landscapes, providing sweeping views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

As the track begins to ascend towards an altitude of approximately 1,100 meters, the scenery transforms dramatically. The open tussock grasslands give way to rugged scree slopes, each step revealing more of the alpine wilderness. At this juncture, look for the large orange triangle marker that indicates it’s time to leave the 4WD track. Here, the trail becomes a thrilling descent down to a scree sidle which can challenge your footing but will reward you with stunning views.

Transitioning into the beech forest section, you may encounter a slower paced segment of the hike. This part of the track can prove to be quite challenging as you navigate through numerous tree falls and slip areas that require climbing around, demanding both agility and patience. The sounds of the forest envelop you, with the rustling leaves and distant bird calls providing a sensory backdrop to your hike.

Finally, as you reach Maitland Stream and the river terraces, the terrain shifts to become easier underfoot, making your hike more enjoyable as the end draws near. A stream crossing is required to reach the hut itself; in good weather, when conditions are clear, this crossing is relatively straightforward, typically no more than knee-deep.

Shortly after crossing, the hut reveals itself in the charming sunny clearing, standing simple yet sturdy against the backdrop of the soaring mountains. This welcoming sight serves as a reward for your efforts, inviting you to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the area.

Either return the same way, or continue south to reach Snowy Gorge Hut and the Ahuriri River.
