Easy Day Hike | Spurs Hut

Spurs Hut

Tucked away in the tussock basins inland from Fairlie in the Mackenzie District, Spurs Hut is a lovely spot for an easy day hike, family adventure, or overnight stay. With its straightforward access and gentle terrain, it’s no wonder the hut is popular with hunters and families alike.

Getting There

The track begins just out of Fairlie, with access through a farm easement before reaching Department of Conservation land. From the start, the way is clear and inviting, following an old farm 4WD track that’s well-marked and graded, making navigation simple.

The Track

The majority of the walk is along this vehicle track, winding gradually through a broad tussock-filled valley. The climb is steady but never steep, leading to a high point that offers wide views of the surrounding basins. From there, the trail gently drops down into the valley where Spurs Hut sits tucked away.

The Hut

Spurs Hut is a classic high-country hut with character. Inside you’ll find four bunks, a log burner (though wood supplies are very limited, so best not to rely on it), and basic facilities including a long-drop toilet. Water is sourced from the nearby stream. It’s rustic, simple, and exactly what you’d expect from a spot that has served both trampers and hunters for many years.

Time & Distance

As a day trip, the hike is about 3 hours return covering 15km, making it very achievable for most fitness levels. It’s short enough to complete in half a day, but with enough variety in the terrain to keep things interesting.

Scenery

The surrounding landscape is a classic Canterbury high-country setting—wide tussock basins, open skies, and a sense of remoteness despite the easy access. The valley itself feels peaceful and expansive, with plenty of space to pause and take in the views.

Final Thoughts

Spurs Hut is one of those trips that proves you don’t need to push hard or travel far to enjoy the magic of the backcountry. Whether you’re after a relaxed family outing, an introduction to hut trips, or just a peaceful day walk, this little corner of the Mackenzie country is well worth exploring.
