Into the Bealey Valley – A Short Walk with Big Rewards

  • 2 min read

Access: West of Arthur’s Pass Village, opposite Jack’s Hut on State Highway 73

Distance: 1.2 km each way to the end of the track (or ~650 m each way to Bealey Chasm)

Time: Up to 1 hour return to the end (or ~10 minutes return to Bealey Chasm)

There is ample parking at the trailhead opposite Jack’s Hut, making access straightforward. For those wanting to stretch things out a little further, the track can also be linked via the Arthur’s Pass Walking Track from the village—an easy way to turn this into a longer, more varied walk.

The Bealey Valley Track begins gently, with a well-formed, easy gradient. The path is wide and smooth underfoot as it leads toward Bealey Chasm, making this first section accessible for most walkers. A series of steps drops down to a sturdy wooden bridge spanning the chasm—an impressive, narrow slice of river where the Bealey surges and tumbles over boulders. If you’re short on time, this alone is worth the visit. Birdlife is lively here, and the sound of rushing water echoes through the gorge.

Beyond the chasm, the character of the track begins to shift. The trail narrows, the footing becomes rougher, and tree roots and rocks start to break the rhythm. There are short, steeper sections as the path gradually works its way up-valley.

Eventually, the bush opens out into a wide clearing. On a clear day, this space offers a striking view toward Mount Rolleston, its presence dominating the skyline. Boardwalks stretch across sections of the clearing, easing the walking, even if they feel a little repetitive underfoot.

At the far end, the track dips back into the bush. More boardwalks, interspersed with rocky patches, exposed roots, and small bridged side streams, add variety and keep the walk engaging.

After around 30–40 minutes from the car park, the track reaches its natural conclusion at the edge of the Bealey River. It’s a quiet, open spot—perfect for sitting, resting, and taking in the surrounding landscape.

The return journey is quicker, but it’s worth resisting the urge to rush. Slowing down offers a chance to notice the details missed on the way in—the textures of the bush, the shifting light, the steady soundtrack of the river.

What makes this track especially appealing is its flexibility. You can tailor it to suit your time and energy, whether that’s a quick stroll to the chasm or a longer wander up-valley. With connections leading east toward the village and west toward Temple Basin and the Otira Valley Track, there’s plenty of scope to explore further.

Accessible, scenic, and adaptable, the Bealey Valley Track is ideal for beginners, those easing into hiking, or anyone simply looking to break up the drive to, or from, the West Coast with a walk that offers far more than its short distance suggests.
