There’s something special about heading into the high country — that sense of wide-open space, golden tussocks, and the steady rhythm of boots on a farm track. The walk to Otamatapaio Hut, tucked beneath the Hawkdun Range, captures all of that and more — quiet solitude, big sky, and the subtle beauty of Central Otago’s backcountry.
🚗 Getting There
The track begins about 30 minutes from Kurow, accessed via the gravel Backyards Road off SH83 15, between Omarama and Kurow. From the 2WD car park, a 5 km walk along a farm 4WD track takes you to the high-clearance 4WD car park. It’s a gentle start, crossing open farmland with the Otamatapaio River winding alongside.
If you’re on foot from the 2WD car park, it’s worth factoring in the extra distance — it adds roughly an hour each way.
🥾 The Track
From the 4WD car park, it’s 10 km to the hut and a steady 520 m climb in total. The entire route follows a well-defined 4WD track, poled the whole way, making navigation straightforward even in less-than-ideal conditions.
You’ll cross the Otamatapaio River three times, each crossing typically knee-deep in normal flows. In late summer, the crossings are usually clear and manageable, but always check the conditions first — the catchment can rise quickly after rain.
Despite the distance, the walk is not challenging. The gradient is mostly gentle, with long, open stretches across grassy terraces. The sound of the river follows you for much of the way, a quiet companion in an otherwise still valley.
⛰️ The Final Stretch
Around the “4 km to go” sign, the landscape begins to close in. The valley narrows, the tussock slopes of the Hawkdun Range rise sharply above, and the climb becomes more noticeable.
It’s classic Otago high country — vast golden hills, and that dry, earthy smell carried by the wind. The sense of remoteness deepens with every step, even though the route is never hard to follow.
Soon enough, you’ll spot the white Otamatapaio Hut, tucked neatly into the Hawkdun Range, with the river running below.
🛖 At the Hut
Otamatapaio Hut is a 4-bunk standard hut, set in a quiet hollow at the base of the range. There’s water from the nearby stream, a long drop, and a simple charm that makes it a comfortable overnight stop.
Evening light spills down the valley beautifully, and on clear nights the stars are dazzling — no light pollution here. It’s the kind of place where time slows down.
If you’re up for a wander, it’s worth following the valley further beyond the hut for views of the upper basin and Hawkdun peaks, or simply sit back and soak in the stillness.
🥣 A Simple Overnight Adventure
At just 15 km each way and with a clear, poled route, this is a perfect introductory overnight hike or a relaxed weekend outing. The track offers a taste of true high country tramping without the technical challenge — ideal for building confidence or winding down after a busier trip.
Bring warm layers even in summer — the altitude and open terrain mean temperatures can drop quickly after sunset.

It’s not the most dramatic hike, nor the hardest, but it’s one that leaves you with a deep sense of calm and connection to the land.
