If you're looking for a stunning day hike that combines breathtaking views, invigorating challenges, and a connection to nature, I highly recommend the climb from Texas Flat to Mt. Izard and the ridge traverse to Mt. Cheeseman in the magnificent Craigieburn Range.
Beginning at Texas Flat, a well-known starting point for several hikes in the Craigieburn area. The morning air was crisp, and the sky was a brilliant blue, promising a perfect day for hiking. The trail began gently, winding along the Hogs Back Track - a mixed use hiking and mountain biking track.
After about an hour of steady climbing, we reached the first major milestone: Mt. Izard. The ascent was challenging but rewarding. Once you leave the Hogs Back Track - route finding skills are necessary as there is no trail - the terrain becomes steeper, and we had to focus on my footing among the rocky outcrops. However, the effort was well worth it. Once at the summit, we were greeted with panoramic views that took my breath away. The rugged beauty of the Craigieburn Range unfolded before us, with valleys and other peaks stretching into the horizon.
After taking some time to enjoy the view, we traversed along the ridge towards Mt. Cheeseman. The traverse was exhilarating, showcasing the true essence of the Craigieburn Range. The exposed ridge required careful navigation due to steep drops and rocky sections.
Reaching Mt. Cheeseman felt like another significant achievement. This summit was just as spectacular as Mt. Izard, if not more so. We took a moment to savor the tranquility of the mountains, feeling a deep appreciation for the unspoiled beauty around us. T
Beginning the descent back to Texas Flat, the trail was steep but manageable, and each step brought us closer to the start. From steep shingle to gentle tussock slopes and beech forest, the terrain varied and challenged until we rejoined the Hogs Back Track and retraced our steps back to Texas Flat.
I can't wait for my next adventure in this stunning part of the Canterbury!
