Overnight to Cedar Flat Hut: A Classic West Coast Adventure
If you’re looking for an accessible overnight tramp on the wild West Coast, Cedar Flat Hut is a fantastic option. Starting from Middlebranch Road near Hokitika, the track takes you through farmland, native bush, river sections, and a swingbridge before reaching two welcoming huts. It’s a hike that captures the rugged beauty and variety the Coast is known for, with the added bonus of nearby hot pools if you’re keen for a soak.
Getting There
The adventure begins at Middlebranch Road, about 30 minutes from Hokitika. The first section crosses a farm easement, so be sure to respect the landowner by leaving gates as you find them and sticking to the marked track. Soon, you’ll pass through a gate and onto Department of Conservation land, where the real backcountry feel begins.
The Track
The trail follows an old bench track, a reminder of the area’s history, before dropping down to the Toaroha River. From here, you’ll follow the river upstream for a stretch. Depending on conditions, you can either take the flood track through the bush or boulder-hop along the riverbed for a faster route.
A side creek crossing adds to the adventure—if you can’t cross safely, it’s best not to continue. After this point, the track climbs to around the 500 m contour before descending again to rejoin the river. From here, it’s only a short distance to Cedar Flat.
Cedar Flat Hut
Reaching the huts means crossing the Cedar Flat Swingbridge over the Toaroha River, and then you’ll find two options for accommodation:
The historic hut – with an open fire and just 2 bunks, it’s rustic and full of character.
The newer hut – more spacious, with 12 bunks and a cosy log burner.
Both huts have tank water and a longdrop toilet, making them comfortable bases for the night.
Side Trip: Hot Pools
If you’re up for an extra excursion, the Cedar Flat Hot Pools are a must. Cross the swingbridge and follow the marked track to Wren Creek. After crossing the creek, you’ll find the pools nestled into the rock face on the other side—a perfect way to soak tired legs.
Tips for Your Trip
Check conditions – weather and river levels can quickly change the track, especially the flood route and crossings.
Pack for an overnighter – warm layers, headlamp, cooker, and a small first aid kit.
Leave No Trace – respect gates, fences, and the huts; carry all rubbish out.
Safety first – if you’re unsure about the side creek crossings, turn back. There’s no shame in regrouping.
Cedar Flat Hut is one of those West Coast classics: wild rivers, deep bush, cosy huts, and even natural hot pools. It’s the perfect overnight hike for those wanting a taste of backcountry adventure without venturing too far from Hokitika.
