Easy Day Hike | Blowfly Hut | South Westland

Updated: Oct 5

The journey begins at the designated parking area along State Highway 6, nestled between the breathtaking destinations of Haast and Fox Glacier. As you step out of your vehicle and onto the well-graded, undulating track, you find yourself instantly enveloped by the vibrant, lush greenery of the native West Coast forest. This region has a rich history, having served as a cattle droving route 1875 to 1961. The path offers a gentle and inviting introduction to the cattle track, drawing you in with its stunning vistas of moss-draped trees, occasional rocky bluffs that provide glimpses over the sparkling Moeraki River, and a sense of the area's history.

As you continue along the trail, you’ll come across the junction with the Moeraki Valley Track. Here, keeping to the main hiking trail, guiding you straight towards the captivating Blowfly Hut. As you approach, an impressive swingbridge appears, spanning the Moeraki River.

The final 15-minute hike brings you to Blowfly Hut, a charming hut nestled in a spacious clearing just a stone's throw from the river. Built in 1905, this eight-bunk hut combines rustic charm with essential comforts, featuring a cozy wood burner for warmth, a long-drop toilet, and a water tank. Its inviting atmosphere makes it an ideal spot to unwind and soak in the surroundings after your short trek.

A short stroll from the hut leads you to the Moeraki River, where you can indulge in various activities. The riverbank offers a refreshing spot for a swim on a warm day, an opportunity to cast a line for fish, or, if you are in luck, a chance to observe the playful Whio (blue duck) as they navigate the rapids with grace and agility. The tranquility of the area, coupled with the lively sounds of nature, creates a perfect setting for relaxation, making this hike not just an adventure, but a memorable experience in the heart of New Zealand's South Westland.
