Kahikatea Lodge: A Day Hike in the Waianakarua Conservation Park

Tucked away in the Waianakarua Conservation Park near Herbert, North Otago, the Kahikatea Lodge track is a beautiful short loop that takes you through native bush, open grassy slopes, and into the foothills of the Mount Misery Range. It’s the perfect half-day adventure for those wanting a mix of forest walking, hill climbing, and a quiet backcountry feel without venturing too far from civilisation.

Getting There

The track is accessed off Mount Misery Road, near Herbert. Follow the road through Glencoe Farm on the public access route — you’ll see a marked car park for another track, but continue to the end of the road for 4WD parking if your vehicle allows. From here, climb the fence stile and take the track to the left, signposted Kahikatea Track, which leads directly towards Kahikatea Lodge.

The Track

The track begins gently, weaving through native bush filled with ferns and kahikatea trees — from which the lodge takes its name. You’ll soon drop down to a small stream crossing before the real climb begins: a steep grassy slope that opens up views back down the valley as you ascend.

At the top of the climb, you’ll find Kahikatea Lodge, a new and beautifully built hut that blends modern comfort with backcountry charm.

Kahikatea Lodge

The lodge is so new it doesn’t yet appear on Topo maps, and while it’s accessible to the public, it’s privately owned and must be booked if you plan to stay overnight.

Facilities include:

  • 6 bunks plus 2 extra mats for overflow

  • Cooking bench

  • Log burner for heating

  • Water tank supply

  • Long drop toilet

It’s a warm, comfortable spot to rest for lunch or a cuppa, and a perfect base for exploring the surrounding tussock hills.

The Loop Track

To complete the circuit, head behind the lodge and climb the tussock slope above. You’ll soon meet the 4WD track that leads toward Mount Misery. From here, turn right follow the poles and fence line downhill to return to the 4WD car park.

Track Stats

  • Distance: 7 km

  • Time: Around 3 hours return (loop)

  • Grade: Moderate – steep sections on grassy slopes

  • Elevation: Gradual climb with one steep ascent

Why It’s Worth It

This short loop packs a lot into a few hours — native forest, open country, great views, and a cozy hut stop all in one. It’s a great introduction to the Waianakarua Conservation Park and perfect for a relaxed day hike or as a tester for an overnight stay at the lodge.

Whether you’re after a peaceful walk through the bush or a bit of hill work to stretch the legs, Kahikatea Lodge makes for a rewarding and scenic day out in North Otago’s hill country.
