Lewis Pass is one of the South Island’s most underrated tramping regions. Nestled between lush beech forests, glacial rivers, alpine basins, and hot springs, it offers an incredible range of tracks—everything from family-friendly day walks to rewarding multi-day missions deep into the backcountry.

These are my top Lewis Pass hikes: the ones I return to, recommend endlessly, and consider essential experiences for anyone exploring this part of New Zealand.

1. Lake Daniell

Distance: 8.4km each way

Time: ~2 hours one way for adults

Grade: Easy / family friendly

Lake Daniell is the perfect introduction to the Lewis Pass region. Starting from Marble Hill Campsite, the track gently winds through beech forest, over bridges and boardwalks, and past quirky features like Heffalump Hole and Troll Bridge.

It’s accessible, consistent, and ideal for families, beginners, or those wanting a relaxed overnighter at Kōhanga Atawhai Manson Nicholls Hut. At the lake, reflections on a calm day are beautiful, and the surrounding goblin forest gives the place an enchanted feel.

Why it makes the list:

An easy but rewarding walk into one of the most serene bush-surrounded lakes in the region.

2. St James Walkway

Distance: 66km

Time: 4–5 days

Grade: Intermediate / multiday

One of New Zealand’s classic long-distance tracks, the St James Walkway offers a diverse mix of beech forest, open valleys, swing bridges, wetlands, and historic huts. Whether you walk the entire track or tackle it in sections, the scenery is always evolving.

A personal highlight is the stretch near Ada Pass, where the track breaks into wide, open meadows framed by braided rivers and mountain ranges.

Why it makes the list:

It’s a true backcountry journey that feels remote yet achievable—perfect for building confidence in longer trips.

3. Magdalen Hut

Distance: ~6km return

Time: 1.5–2 hours

Grade: Easy

Magdalen Hut is one of the quickest and most rewarding day walks or overnight hikes in the Lewis Pass area. Following the Boyle River, the track to this newer hut is ideal for families or those wanting a gentle warm-up hike.

It’s also a great option when the weather on the high tops turns foul—still giving you that backcountry hut experience without the exposure.

Why it makes the list:

Short, sweet, and perfect for beginners or as a “leg-stretcher” on a road trip.

4. Sylvia Tops

Distance: 8–10 hours round trip

Grade: Advanced / big day mission

For those who love steep climbs and alpine ridges, Sylvia Tops is a Lewis Pass classic. This route quickly gains elevation through thick beech forest before emerging onto a spectacular ridge system with 360° mountain views.

The tops are broad, wild, and incredibly scenic—especially in late summer when the alpine plants are in bloom.

Why it makes the list:

It’s one of the best “big day out” alpine missions in the region, offering challenge and serious reward.

5. Nina Hut

Distance: 10km one way

Time: 2.5–3.5 hours

Grade: Easy–Intermediate

Nina Hut is a favourite for first-time overnighters. The track is gentle, with swing bridges, open clearings, and soothing river views along the way. The modern hut makes it especially appealing for families and beginner trampers.

Keep an eye out for whio (blue duck) in the river—they’re often spotted along this route.

Why it makes the list:

It’s accessible, beautiful, and perfect for a low-stress overnight adventure.

6. Lewis Pass Tops

Distance: 5–7 hours return

Grade: Intermediate–Advanced

A straightforward but steep climb from the Lewis Pass summit takes you onto some of the best accessible tops in the region. Once you break above the bushline, the world opens into sweeping tussock basins, tarns, and endless mountain views.

Campers will love tarn-side camping spots near the Apprentice or Lucretia tarns. It’s one of those places where sunrise and sunset feel like they’ve been designed just for you.

Why it makes the list:

The ratio of effort to reward is incredible—alpine scenery from the moment you hit the tops.

7. Hope–Kiwi Track

Distance: 2 days or longer

Grade: Intermediate

This is a classic Lewis Pass valley track, perfect for hikers who want a moderate but stunning overnight or multi-day option. The walk through the Hope River valley is peaceful, framed by beech forest and open grassy flats.

Hope Kiwi Lodge sits in a beautiful spot, and the journey between huts (Hope Halfway, Top Hope, and Hope Kiwi) adds flexibility to your trip planning.

Why it makes the list:

It’s quieter than many other options (outside the Te Araroa season) and offers a great introduction to longer valley-based routes.

8. Doubtful Valley & Hot Springs Stream

Distance: Varies

Grade: Intermediate

For those who love mixing hiking with a bit of indulgence, the Doubtful Valley is a must-do.

The track follows the Doubtful River into a remote and scenic valley, with the added bonus of natural hot springs along Hot Springs Stream.

It’s a perfect autumn or winter weekend trip—nothing beats soaking tired legs in warm natural pools surrounded by beech forest.

Why it makes the list:

Backcountry hiking + hot springs = perfection.

Final Thoughts

Lewis Pass offers an incredible range of tramping experiences—from easy lakeside strolls to full alpine epics. Whether you’re new to tramping or chasing your next multi-day mission, this region delivers every time.
