A Short Escape | Hiking Gebbie Pass to Packhorse Hut

Packhorse Hut from Gebbies Pass

Packhorse Hut from Gebbies Pass – A Banks Peninsula Classic

One of Canterbury’s most accessible backcountry huts, Packhorse Hut is perched on the slopes of Mt Bradley along Banks Peninsula. At 450 metres, it’s a perfect half-day hike or overnight option, with sweeping views over Lyttelton Harbour, the Canterbury Plains, and beyond to the Southern Alps.

Starting at Gebbies Pass

The track begins at Gebbies Pass, about 30 minutes from Christchurch. From the carpark, the route climbs steadily through farmland and pine forest. It’s a gentle but consistent gradient, making it popular for families, beginner trampers, and those looking for a quick escape close to the city.

Up to the hut

The trail winds its way upward, offering glimpses back toward Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora and the flat expanse of the Canterbury Plains. As you climb higher, the volcanic origins of Banks Peninsula become clear in the rocky outcrops and sweeping ridges.

After around 1.5–2 hours, you’ll reach Packhorse Hut. Built in 1914 from local stone, it was one of four huts originally planned by Harry Ell for his ambitious Summit Road walking route. Today it’s a DOC-maintained hut with a rustic charm, solid stone walls, and a sense of history that makes it unique among Canterbury huts, if you're planning to stay make sure you book via the DOC website.

Views from the top

From the hut, the views are outstanding. Lyttelton Harbour stretches out beneath you, its waters changing colour with the light, while the Port Hills frame the horizon. To the south, the wide sweep of Lake Ellesmere glistens, and on a clear day, you can trace the line of the Southern Alps across the plains.

A perfect adventure close to Christchurch

Whether you make it a day trip or bring a sleeping bag to stay the night, the Packhorse Hut walk from Gebbies Pass is a Canterbury classic. It’s a reminder that you don’t need to go far from the city to find a hut, big views, and a taste of the backcountry.
