Omahu Bush, Gibraltar Rock, and the Hunt for a Forgotten Hut
If you’re looking for a short but rewarding adventure close to Christchurch, Omahu Bush and Gibraltar Rock are a perfect mix of views, forest, and history. With two nearby car parks along Summit Road—one for Gibraltar Rock and another smaller one about 100 metres away for Omahu Bush—it’s easy to link the two into a full day of exploring.
Gibraltar Rock
From the Gibraltar Rock car park, it’s only about 30 minutes to the summit. The track is straightforward, but the final climb onto the rock involves a bit of scrambling and has steep drop-offs, so caution is needed. On a clear day, the views are spectacular—stretching out across Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains, and down to Lake Ellesmere.
If you’re short on time, this makes for an excellent quick hike with big rewards.
Omahu Bush
If you’ve got more time, wander 100 metres along Summit Road to the smaller Omahu Bush car park. Here you’ll find a network of tracks winding through regenerating bush and beech forest, a quieter alternative to the open landscapes of the rock. The trails are well-marked and give a completely different feel—shady, sheltered, and rich with birdsong.
This is where you can slow the pace, soak in the forest atmosphere, and connect different loops for as long or short a walk as you like.
Hunting for the Derelict Hut
Adding a touch of mystery to the day is the hunt for a derelict hut hidden within Omahu Bush. Remnants of old farm and forestry use linger in the area, and tucked away off the main track you might come across the remains of a hut slowly being reclaimed by the bush. It’s a reminder of the long human history here, layered on top of the natural one.
Finding it is half the fun—just remember to tread carefully and respect the site.
Linking It All Together
A great way to structure the day is to start with Gibraltar Rock for the big views, then loop through Omahu Bush for shade, history, and the hut hunt. Together, they make a varied and satisfying outing, combining high vistas, native bush, and a dash of local history—all within easy reach of Christchurch.
